Where Business Strategy Meets System Design

By Mitu Akter Monita · September 12, 2026

Notes on keeping strategy decisions and system decisions in the same conversation.

Strategy decisions and system decisions get made in different rooms too often. A growth plan assumes a capability the architecture cannot support; an architecture choice quietly forecloses a market move. Neither side notices until the work has already started.

Keeping the two conversations together is not a process problem so much as a language problem. Strategy work talks about timing, leverage and risk. System design talks about ownership, boundaries and failure modes. The useful translation happens when each side writes its assumptions down in the other side's terms.

My rule of thumb: any strategy decision that depends on a system property should name that property explicitly. Any system decision that changes what the business can do should be written down as a strategy decision. The overlap is where the interesting work lives, and it is also where most expensive mistakes are made.
